New HK Products for 2012

back to newsroom

Columbus, Georgia — Heckler & Koch introduced new rifles, a new pistol model, and its long awaited upper receiver kit at the 2012 SHOT Show, the firearms industry’s major trade exhibition in Las Vegas.

The 7.62 mm MR762A1 is a premium grade semi-automatic arm with match rifle features and like its 5.56 mm counterpart, the MR762A1 is a direct descendent of the HK416/417 series, only in a semi-automatic rifle configuration developed for civilian users.

Using the HK-proprietary operating system, the MR762A1 is gas operated and uses a piston and a solid operating “pusher” rod in place of the common gas tube normally employed in most AR-style rifles.

Pioneered by Heckler & Koch in the G36, HK416, and HK417; this method virtually eliminates malfunctions common to direct impingement gas systems since hot carbon fouling and waste gases do not enter the receiver area. The MR762A1 stays cleaner, reducing heat transfer to the bolt and bolt carrier, and drastically reducing wear and tear on other critical components. The service life of all parts is increased substantially.

The MR762A1 uses a barrel produced by Heckler & Koch's famous cold hammer forging process. This manufacturing process uses the highest quality steel, producing a barrel that ensures superior accuracy, even after firing thousands of rounds. The MR762A1 is produced at Heckler & Koch's American manufacturing facilities from both American and German-made components.

MR762A1 rifles are well-suited for a variety of applications including target shooting, tactical law enforcement use, police patrol, and hunting.

Also officially introduced at the industry tradeshow was the .45 caliber HK45 CT (Compact Tactical) pistol. The HK45 Compact Tactical builds on the tough, military lineage of the Heckler & Koch HK45 series of handguns to devise the ultimate operator’s pistol. A variant of the HK45 CT was recently adopted as the new pistol of a major U.S. special operations unit.

The HK45 CT comes standard with 10-round magazines and an extra grip backstrap to ensure a custom fit for each shooter’s hand. Other features include HK’s proprietary internal mechanical recoil reduction system that reduces the recoil forces effecting the pistol and shooter by as much as 30%. An “O-ring” barrel means better slide-to-barrel lockup and enhanced accuracy. The threaded barrel on the HK45 CT is made using the famous HK cold-hammer forging process for superior performance.

Like the MR rifles, the HK45 CT is produced at HK’s American manufacturing facility in Newington, New Hampshire from U.S. and German components.

Rounding out the joint American-German made products is the MR556A1 Upper Receiver Kit. The Upper Receiver Kit includes a complete 5.56 mm barrel assembly, HK Free Floating Rail System handguard, special HK bolt carrier assembly, buffer, and buffer spring allowing most AR-style rifles to be retrofitted to HK’s pusher rod system.

Lastly, Heckler & Koch debuted two variants of the new 7.62 mm G28 rifle, seen for the first time in North America.

The G28 is the new designated marksman rifle for the German army. Based on the MR308 civilian competition rifle (the European variant of the new MR762A1), the G28 uses the HK417 “envelope” as its design foundation but with several significant differences.

The G28 employs a steel upper receiver, is semi-automatic only, and has new STANAG 4694 NATO accessory rails (compatible with MIL-STD-1913 “Picatinny” rails). A new G28 two-stage gas regulator is designed for both suppressed and unsuppressed use. The G28 is equipped with a free-floating, chromed-lined barrel manufactured using HK’s legendary cold-hammer forging technology.

Available in Standard Configuration and a slightly lighter weight Patrol Configuration both G28 variants come with retractable buttstocks. The ultra-accurate G28 comes with a choice of premium Schmidt & Bender scopes, depending on configuration, as well as a selection of critical-use accessories. Both G28 variants have a special low IR observable green/brown (RAL8000) color finish. The G28 is currently in operational use in Afghanistan and although a semi-automatic rifle is only available to law enforcement and military customers.
